How Much Skin Care Product Should You Really Use?

How much Skincare Product To Use In Your Anti-Wrinkle Skincare Routine

When it comes to face creams and serums, its so easy to apply too much product. A good rule of thumb when it comes to applying your skincare regiment is to remember, less is usually more, especially when it comes to medical grade products. But if you are like so many other anti wrinkle warriors, you find you use too much because you really are not sure how to much of each you should apply. Revealed here is the ideal amount of each moisturizer / serum you should use.

1 - Moisturizers - Face Creams

Depending on the dryness of your skin you do not need to apply a huge amount of cream on your face, too much moisturizer can even end up clogging your pores and leave you with greasy feeling skin. Think of the size of a contact lens as a guide when applying your moisturizer. This will prevent you from using too much of your face cream. Any more than this the beauty product will not properly absorb into your skin and will end up sitting on the surface of the skin, not allowing it to breathe.

How Much to Use: With day creams and night creams you do not need more than the size of a contact lens.

Beauty ProTip: If you feel you aren’t using enough moisturizer or your skin is mature extra skin, try warming the face cream between your palms before applying to skin. Be careful as this will create a more liquid consistency, making it easy to use too much!

2 - Anti-Aging Serums

The anti-aging properties of a beauty serum might tempt you to really go all out and slather it on. But don’t! The best serums contain retinoids, the gold standard of medical grade anti-aging ingredients which can cause irritation, redness, and peeling. Know your product for if you do not use enough of the concentrated serum the active ingredients will not take effect on your skin while using too much will may overstimulate with a chance of damaging the barrier of the skin.

How Much to Use: Use a coffee bean as a guide for applying your serum (right).

Overdoing this type of face scrub can have some pretty damaging side effects, Dr Pratt recommends that you exfoliate your skin twice a week to let the new fresh skin surface.

How Much to Use: Squeeze out a dollop size of an almond.

Beauty ProTip:  Start with warm water and apply product to wet face. Gently massage exfoliating creme gently using your fingertips.

4 - Facial Cleansers

When it comes to washing your aging face its best to opt for a soothing cream formula for it will add moisture as you unlock the layers of your skin. look to squeeze out about one water bottle top for size and volume. That's really all you need, whether the formula suds up or not.

How Much to Use: Look to squeeze out the size of a water bottle cap.

5 - Sunscreens

The number oneway to protect your skin from the early signs of aging is to use a sunscreen everyday. And it is important to remember to use a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks out both UVA and UVB rays. As for application a good rule of thumb is to remember that applying too much facial sunscreen will leave you with an unattractive white film across your face and too little will put you at risk of sun damage. Remember that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours, or more frequently after swimming, heavy perspiration, or toweling off. Also remember, no matter how much sunscreen you apply, the SPF should be 15 or higher for adequate protection – and ideally 30 or higher for extended time spent outdoors.

In addition to using sunscreen, seek shade whenever possible, and wear sun-protective clothing, broad-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses.

How Much to Use: Think of a chocolate button for your guide for applying sun screen to the face.

Beauty Pro Tip: Make sure your face sunscreen protects your from both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a Broad Spectrum Sunscreen. Extra bonus points if your sunscreen is a tinted moisturizer! Dr. Pratt loves Sente Pollution Shield SPF46 Broad Spectrum Sunscreen.

6 - Face Masks

Taking a few minutes to treat yourself to an in home spa treatments is what fask masks are all about. Its a quick fix to having your skin feeling, purified, invigorated, and smoothed.

7- Neck Creams

Why is it that we always forget to take care the neck area. We always seem to apply products to our face yet we stop right there at our chin. This is completely wrong as the skin on your neck is so thin making it a target for fine lines and wrinkles. Truth be told it is dead give-a-way and a good indication of your age away. Think of the skin on your neck as an orange peel, if you were to leave the peel of an orange in the hot sun it would turn dry and shriveling up at the speed of light, a whole lot faster than if you were to leave it in a moisturized area.

How Much to Use: Don't forget your neck! A blueberry-sized serving will accurately cover under your chin, behind your neck and through the decollate area to keep this area hydrated.

Dr. Pratt Recommends:

SENTÉ Firming Neck Cream

8 - Eye Creams

Why is it that most cosmetic products usually don't tell you exactly how  muc h you really need to use (is it because they want you to get through that tube, bottle quickly as possible so you purchase more?).
Good rule of thumb: Remember that you need less eye cream than you probably imagined. Think a grain of rice worth for each eye — that's it! The best anti wrinkle eyecreams have been designed to absorb deeply, so a small amount will do the job. If you go overboard and use too much product you will increase the risk of eye irritation and may smudge up your makeup application.

How Much to Use: Be careful no to use to much eye cream as you dont want to blink the product into your eye. A grain of rice per eye.

Beauty Pro Tip: Whatever eye cream you decide on, you need to know where and how to apply your eye cream correctly. Always remember that the skin under your eyes is very delicate, so it’s important not to tug or pull at the skin. Dab the eye cream in small dots under your eyes, just above your cheekbone not directly under the eyes, instead target below where facial wrinkles form.

SENTÉ Illuminé Eye Cream
